Overview
Kacharam Waterfalls (often listed as Kanthalloor Waterfalls) is a charming cascade near the Kanthalloor/Marayoor region of Idukki district. The falls descend over a broad rocky face and form a natural pool — a popular spot for photographers and day-trippers from Munnar and Marayoor.
How to reach
From Munnar: the drive to the Marayoor/Kanthalloor area is roughly ~40 km and takes about 1.5 hours depending on traffic and road conditions. The final approach often requires a local road and a short walk/trek from the parking spot. If you’re coming from Marayoor or Kanthalloor village, local taxis, jeep safaris or motorbikes are commonly used.
Trail & accessibility
The waterfall is reached by a short downhill walk (roughly a few hundred metres) over uneven, rocky terrain — expect muddy and boulder-strewn sections, especially during and immediately after the rains. Wear sturdy footwear and avoid the trail in heavy rain or after dusk.
Best time to visit
Monsoon to post-monsoon (June–September) gives the most dramatic flow and lush surroundings. However, the trail can be slippery — exercise caution. Winter months offer pleasant weather with reduced water flow but easier access.
Tips for visitors
- Carry drinking water & snacks (no food stalls near the falls in many seasons).
- Use sturdy, non-slip shoes; avoid flip-flops on the trek.
- Don’t swim alone — the pool can have hidden rocks and strong currents after heavy rains.
- Respect local private lands — follow marked paths and local signage.
- Leave no trace — carry back plastics and wrappers.
